Math Goals:
Our Stormonth Teachers are committed to making sure that every child receives the math instruction needed to become an efficient, flexible, and accurate mathematician. Math leaders work side by side with classroom teachers, co-planning and co-teaching lessons, providing training and resources, assessing student strengths and needs, and offering intervention services when needed. Students will leave Stormonth with a robust understanding of how to accurately solve math tasks while making meaning surrounding the context of the work
Math Intervention:
Our math interventionists use a variety of resources. The main resources for intervention and professional training is in Math Recovery and the Bridges Intervention Curriculum. Math Intervention is designed to assess where students are currently in their mathematical thinking, diagnose problem areas, and create a plan for filling any gaps in mathematical understanding. Math Recovery and Bridges Intervention focus on conceptual understanding of math, and push students to discuss and verbalize their strategies and thinking when approaching math work. We blend this training with our own professional resources and input from classroom teachers.
Students qualify for math intervention in a variety of ways. Teachers, interventionists and administrators work together to analyze data, share observations and make decisions on students as individuals. The baseline is a student who consistently scores in the lowest 30% on his/her MAP tests. Other factors including classroom performance, teacher observation, and diagnostic math assessments are used in making any final decisions regarding qualifications for math intervention.
How to best help your child:
More than any website, talking with your child about math, playing board games and focusing on some of the themes highlighted in your child’s classroom work would be the most beneficial for building a strong number sense. The website Math at Home is a great resource for families provided by our curricula resource Bridges.
