Music
Our goal for students in music class is that all students will learn how to be:
Tuneful - to have tunes in their heads and learn to coordinate their voices to sing those tunes.
Beatful - to feel the pulse of music and how that pulse is grouped in either 2s or 3s
Artful - to be moved by music in the many ways music can elicit a feelingful response (Feierabend, 2006)
What to expect?
Students will experience playing different instruments, learn how to use their singing voice, and dance to folk and popular music during their time in music class. They will explore a variety of music history topics including composers, and music's role in cultures around the world. Every year, students will have multiple performance opportunities including: folk dance night, musicals, a talent show, and performance outreach to the community. Students will see and hear professional musicians through field trips to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and guest musicians visiting our school.

Physical Education
We believe that Physical Education is a phase of education which makes unique and important contributions to the total development of all students. A healthy body and sound mind complement each other and are frameworks for optimum mental effectiveness. Movement begins before birth and continues throughout life. It is the children's way of learning about themselves and the world around them. It is their way of learning by doing. A Chinese proverb states, "I hear and forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand."We are the part of education that MOVES!
Our program includes lessons and activities that should enhance your child's skills in motor development, team and individual sport skills, as well as contribute to self-esteem, positive interpersonal relationships, responsible behavior and independence.
What to expect?
Students in grades 1-4 meet 3 times per week for 30 minutes each. Students are required to have a pair of athletic shoes kept at school and worn for PE class. They will not be able to participate if they do not have proper PE shoes.
Shorts or leggings are required to be worn under skirts and dresses during PE class.
A handwritten note is required if a student is not able to participate in PE class. A doctor's note is required if a student is not able to participate for more than 3 days, in which case a release to participate note bay be required.

SEL - Social Emotional Learning
Social and emotional learning (SEL) teaches students how to identify and manage their feelings, build healthy relationships, and navigate social environments. By working on social skills in the classroom, we give students the knowledge and skills to respond to challenges with a resilient mindset, manage conflict in a healthy way, spread kindness, and positively impact those around them.
What to expect?
The school counselors visit each classroom biweekly to teach SEL lessons. Lesson topics include: bully prevention, conflict resolution, emotional awareness and regulation, navigating peer interactions positively, celebrating diversity, and more. Lessons work to be proactive in teaching students skills to manage daily interactions and are also responsive to grade level needs that may come up. Counselors work closely with grade level teachers to support the implementation of our new Yale RULER curriculum that is being integrated into regular classroom instruction.
