Weather Protocol & Decision Making
Decisions to delay or close school are based upon data from the National Weather Service and consulting with surrounding school districts. Every effort is made to make an announcement by 6 a.m.
Factors taken into consideration:
- Snow: heavy accumulation, drifting and blowing, unsafe road conditions throughout the District
- Cold: School will typically close for an Extreme Cold Warning. School will remain open during a Cold Weather Advisory.
Inclement Weather Conditions may cause one of the following:
- Two-Hour Delay: School will begin two hours after normal start time to allow streets and highways to be cleared.
- School Closing: School is canceled due to unsafe weather conditions for all or most of the school day.
- Early Release: Students are released early due to poor conditions, impacting safe transportation from school to home.
Emergency Procedures & Safety Drills
The district conducts regular safety drills to ensure students and staff are prepared for the following situations:
- Fire Drill: Held monthly as required by state law.
- Tornado ‘Take Cover’ Drill: Teachers will escort students to designated shelter areas and students outdoors will immediately be called inside.
- Evacuation Procedure: In a Standard Evacuation, students are sent home to their normal destinations. In an Immediate Evacuation, students are moved to a safe, off-site location and parents will be notified to pick up their children from that specified location.
Communication & Planning
In the event of a closing or emergency dismissal, the district will attempt to notify all parents.
All school closings due to inclement weather or other emergencies will be broadcast by WTMJ (620 am radio, TV4), WITI (TV6), WISN (1130 am radio, TV12), WDJT (TV58) and WKTI (94.5 FM radio). Please establish a plan for your child’s care if school closes unexpectedly.
