RULER in Schools
RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL). Teachers and school leaders use RULER strategies to build and maintain a positive school climate while also supporting each student’s individual emotional growth. With RULER, classrooms are welcoming spaces where students feel supported, relationships are stronger, and everyone is better able to learn and succeed.
RULER for Families
RULER for Families introduces social and emotional learning in simple, everyday language that feels approachable and inclusive. It offers parents and caregivers practical tools to help children grow into kind, confident, and resilient individuals. At the same time, it supports adults in being their “best selves”—patient, responsive, and loving—while encouraging children to meet high expectations. RULER for Families also celebrates cultural diversity, strengthens social and emotional skills at home, and helps prepare children for lifelong success.
RULER is an acronym that stands for:
-
- Recognizing emotions in oneself and others through facial expressions, body language, voice, and behavior
- Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions in oneself and others
- Labeling emotions with accurate words from a nuanced vocabulary
- Expressing emotions differently depending on context, situational expectations, and culture
- Regulating emotions with effective strategies and supporting others in their regulation of emotions
