The construction phase for the April 2022 voter-approved facilities project is underway for both the new Bayside Middle School and critical improvements to Stormonth Elementary School!
As the project to construct a new, once-in-a-generation school for the middle school students in Fox Point and Bayside continues, we wanted to be sure the community has access to the process we’re following.
Fox Point-Bayside prides itself in providing excellence in education within the Fox Point-Bayside School District, and while ensuring our students have the best learning experience possible IS our area of expertise, the physical planning and development of school facilities is not, which is why we’ve partnered with some of the best in the business to manage the process.
Here's our team and their roles:
District leadership and the school board work together to ensure project decisions are made in the best interest of students and families, and keep the community updated on project progress.
Miron Construction: The construction partner overseeing communication and on-the-ground construction.
Huffman Keel Partners, Inc: The District’s Owner’s Representative acts as a liaison between the District and the other partners and subcontractors. They are responsible for ensuring that the project is completed on time, on budget, and to the District’s satisfaction.
Eppstein Uhen Architects: They conducted an initial facility assessment, supported the referendum process and then worked with the District to turn the critical needs and vision into final architectural plans.
ECS: This third-party inspection agency was hired by the District and charged with rigorously evaluating Miron Construction and subcontractor work. ECS was hired by the district in addition to the Village provided inspector, SAFEbuilt, to ensure the project is completed to the highest degree of quality possible.
von Briesen & Roper: This trusted law firm provides the District with legal advice and counsel with regard to the architectural and construction contracts.
Attolles Law: This trusted law firm provides the District with legal advice and counsel to guide the zoning process with matters such as permits and entitlement with the Village of Bayside.
Construction began in May 2023 after more than a year of purposeful design and engagement with staff and local officials. We anticipate construction will continue through the 2023-2024 school year, opening in time for the 2024-2025 school year!
Construction Safety
The Miron Construction crews will be working diligently on the job site to be a good neighbor throughout the project. For everyone’s safety, it is very important to observe all posted signage around the buildings and avoid the active construction areas. Typical hours of operation are weekdays from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Miron Superintendent Josh Brzezinski is the on-site point of contact for construction-related questions. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the District Office. Josh can be reached at josh.brzezinski@miron-construction.com or (920) 843-2830.
Bayside Families:
The safest place to drop off and pick up your student is on the curb on school grounds. Please do not park, drop off or pick up your student on King Road or Ellsworth Lane. Do not park at the south end of the school campus or Ellsworth Park to pick up your child.
Remaining renovations are scheduled to start in early 2024. Contractors will begin mobilizing in February for the first phase of work including the old locker room area and district office.
What’s next?:
Unoccupied basement and attic windows will be installed this fall. In summer 2024, crews will work to replace the building’s original heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and electrical systems, as well as add a fire suppression sprinkler system.
The roofing for both the main stage and the district office is now complete, with the exterior framing nearing its final stages. In the commons area, structural steel framing has been successfully finished, and the decking installation is ongoing through mid-January. Moving to the classrooms, significant milestones have been reached, including the near completion of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work on the second floor, as well as the commencement of these installations on the first floor. Additionally, the exterior finished brick is currently being installed..
What's Next:
In the classrooms, the MEPF (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection) overhead and in-wall rough-ins are ongoing for both the first and second floors. Exterior window installations are scheduled to commence in mid to end-January. Moving to the Gym/District Offices, roofing will reach completion in January, accompanied by the pouring of concrete slabs in mid to end-January. The Commons Area will see the continuation of steel detailing and decking until mid-January, with roofing slated to commence towards the end of January.
Design Highlights:
Highly visible main entrance designed to create a consistent entry experience for students, regardless if arriving by bus, bike or vehicle, and seamlessly welcome visitors.
Following the secure, central entrance (with high visibility to the school office), all students move together into their own secure grade neighborhoods.
Shared spaces are centralized in the building, including the cafeteria, Library Media Center (LMC), music, art and physical education areas (gym and fitness room).
Outdoor gathering space outside of Library Media Center to create a strong interior and exterior connection to learning.
District Offices, with a separate entrance, are located to the far right (north) end of the building.
Dedicated school bus drop off/pick up lane, separate from King Road with landscape buffer.
Phillip’s Supreme Court Memorial and softball field will be relocated with other play areas.
One and two-story building heights and exterior colors selected to fit into the neighborhood’s mid-century modern architecture and celebrate school pride.
Materials, windows, and landscaping selected to maximize natural light and connections to nature, including relocated prairie grasses and landscaping.
Processes and Permits
From the very beginning, and with regard to every aspect of this project, safety has been the top priority. One of the best things about our schools is that they are nestled within the villages and neighborhoods in which we live. However, that also requires that we work closely with the Village of Bayside and our school’s surrounding neighbors to ensure that the new school is as safe as possible for students, families and neighbors.
